Help Us Complete "Chasing the Ghost"!
Click to DonateAfter democracy returned to Argentina in the mid-1980s, the cultural tradition of social tango dancing had a remarkable renaissance. Leading the way was a dedicated group of men and women dancers — the kings and queens of the milonga, the late night dance halls of Buenos Aires. Because of them, social tango dancing didn't just survive, it thrived and spread around the globe. Chasing the Ghost explores their legacy, as age and infirmity have taken their toll.
As one of our milongueros, Pocho Carreras, said of tango, "It's passion. It's life. It's to feel alive when you dance." Another, Osvaldo Natucci, said, "A well-danced tango is to win against death with a knock-out punch...until death wins."
In the early 2000s, we made multiple trips to Buenos Aires where we extensively filmed milongas, performance venues and private sessions--capturing a golden moment when many of the last milongueros and milongueras still reigned. We have filmed over 40 interviews with dancers, teachers, tango historians and DJ's, and done additional filming at tango festivals in Denver and Asheville.
We are currently seeking funding to complete production and move into the post-production phase. With funding, we will return to Buenos Aires and several American locations to complete the interviews and narration.
As the filming involves both English and Spanish interviews, we will create multiple language versions of the film using subtitles. Our initial plan is to have versions in English, Spanish, Italian, German, and French, with the option to add other languages later.
